The Huntsville Literary Association was incorporated as a nonprofit organization designed to promote and encourage the literary arts in the Tennessee Valley and to publish a literary journal. IN 1967, HLA joined The Arts Council, Inc. HLA has received grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Alabama Humanities Foundation, the Southern Arts Federation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Jane Lowe Charitable Foundation to support its programs.
Since 1867, HLA has sponsored a Young Writers Contest that is open to public, private, and home-schooled students. The contest offers monetary awards, honors, and public recognition.
Now in its forty-height year, POEM magazine continues to receive recognition as one of the finest poetry magazines in the United States. Its two annual issues present well-known poets as well as talented newcomers. POEM is funded by the HLA membership and has received grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
